Edge of the Forest. Ligovo

Birches crowd the foreground of Konstantin Somov, Edge of the Forest. Ligovo, their pale trunks rising against a deep green canopy at the treeline. Beyond them the wood falls into shadow, layered greens turning almost black where the light thins. Somov paints the Russian summer parkland near Ligovo with loose, dappled brushwork, sunlight breaking through leaves in flecks of yellow ochre and soft olive. Grass along the forest edge catches that light in dry, silvery strokes, and the undergrowth keeps a low hum of viridian and umber. Air holds the whole scene together, warm and still, as if the afternoon had settled between the trunks. It suits a study or a quiet reading nook where green tones and a hush of shade belong.
