Eclipse

A blackened sun hangs above jagged Himalayan ridgelines in Eclipse, one of the most quietly ominous mountain scenes Nicholas Roerich painted. The disc sits low, half swallowed by shadow. Below it, peaks in deep ultramarine and slate carry snowfields that read almost silver against the darkened air. Thin bands of ochre trace the horizon where light still clings. Every ridge is built from flat, tempered planes of paint, edges crisp as cut stone. A work of this gravity belongs in a study or reading room, where low light and long silences match its own.
