Early Spring

Melting snow opens the foreground of Early Spring, a Russian landscape by Vitold Byalynitsky-Birulya. Brown earth shows through in patches while the last white drifts hold their ground along the treeline. Bare birches rise in slim silver trunks against a pale blue sky washed with soft cloud. Thin streams of meltwater cut channels through the thawing ground, and a low sun lays long violet shadows across the snow.
