Snow lingers in the gullies while the slopes shed the last of winter. Early Spring in the Mountains shows Oleksa Novakivskyi reading the Carpathian thaw in paint. Leafless trees cross the hillside in thin dark lines, branches still empty against a pale sky. Below, the ground shifts from old drifts to open earth, violet in the hollows, ochre where the sun reaches. Short loaded strokes of paint build each ridge, the brushwork left visible and unhurried.
