Scarlet and amber maples flare along a shadowed shore in Early Autumn, Montreal River, Algoma, where J. E. H. MacDonald caught the northern backcountry at the turn of the season. Thick ridges of oil paint build the scene: grey-green water sliding between Canadian Shield granite, birches gone butter yellow, undergrowth burning crimson at the treeline. Dark spruce silhouettes crowd the far shore, every stroke loaded, the Group of Seven working the northern bush at full pressure. Made for a study or library with walnut shelves and low lamplight, where the cool boreal light reads as a window left open to the cold.
