Dwelling of Gunding

A stone dwelling of Gunding rises from a Himalayan slope, its flat roof and blocky walls catching the last cold light of afternoon. Nicholas Roerich sets his architecture low in the frame, humble against immensity. Above it, snow ridges stack in bands of ultramarine and glacier white, each plane edged with a darker seam of shadow. Thin smoke lifts from the roof, the only motion in an otherwise held breath. The paint lies thin and dry, tempera-firm, letting the raw tone of the ground glow through cobalt distance. Study, library, or a quiet hallway facing north would suit its stillness well.
