Douglas Hall

A red roofed house sits square in the canvas, whitewashed walls taking the light. Douglas Hall is Peploe at his most architectural, the building treated like a still life, every plane weighed and set down. The paint lies on thick and deliberate. Cream walls carry traces of grey shadow, the roof a compressed brick red, windows and chimneys set in with dark, quick strokes. Around the building the greens turn olive and cool, brushed in short directional marks that let the ground breathe. Sky is a thin wash of pale blue, barely there, so the structure does the talking. Strong in a stairwell, a hallway, or a study where something orderly and sunlit is wanted.
