Boats crowd the quay at Dordrecht, masts crossing the water in a lattice of rigging and grey light. Frances Hodgkins records the Dutch river town with her loose, watercolor-bright hand. Hulls tilt at odd angles, moored along the harbor edge. Washed blues and slate greens dominate the scene, cut by pale sunlight on wet cobbles and the dark verticals of ship timbers. Gables step back from the waterfront, drawn quickly, their windows suggested in single dabs. The water carries reflections in broken, horizontal strokes, ochre and rose flickering through the grey. Figures on the dock read as small accents of color. Suits a hallway or stairwell where the tall harbor verticals can breathe, or a study with cool-toned furnishings.
