Dock End at Whitby lies silvered and still in Dock End Whitby Harbour by Moonlight, a nocturne by Louis Hubbard Grimshaw. The harbour mouth holds its breath under a high, pale moon. Grimshaw builds the scene from deep blue and slate grey, broken by a warm path of moonlight across the wet cobb and the dark hulls of moored fishing boats. Rigging etches thin black lines against the glow, while lamplight from the dockside houses smudges amber into the water. Every surface reads as damp: stone, rope, timber, all of it holding the nights cold sheen. A seascape like this settles naturally into a study or a hallway, where its quiet northern light rewards a second and third look.
