Dobroye. The bridge

A weathered wooden bridge spans a slow river at Dobroye. Pyotr Konchalovsky paints the crossing plain and honest, its reflection trembling in water the color of pewter. Thick oil strokes build the banks, grass laid in urgent dabs of sap green and ochre. The timber railing crosses the picture in one dark diagonal, and above it the sky opens in broad sweeps of cream and grey blue. Every plank reads as brushwork, not detail. Built for a hallway, stair landing, or quiet reading nook, this Russian landscape holds a village summer steady, whatever the weather outside the window.
