Distillery in Izvara

A low stone distillery sits beneath a heavy Russian sky, its smoke curling past shingled roofs in Distillery in Izvara by Nicholas Roerich. The building anchors the scene like something carved rather than built. Roerich loads the composition with texture: mossy boulders in the foreground, spruce silhouettes pressing at the edges, muted greens and umbers laid in broad tempera-like passages. The vaporous sky, washed in grey and pale violet, contrasts against the dark mass of chimneys and timber. His symbolist handling turns an estate outbuilding into a monument.
