The hilltop village of Eze gathers along its rocky spur, seen from far below as Churchill painted it on the Cote dAzur. Distant View of Eze renders the medieval eyrie in soft Mediterranean light. Rooftops and walls stack along the ridge in muted golds and greens, the rendered brushwork heavy in places, thin and dry in others. The sea sits pale at the horizon, and the sky carries that milky warmth particular to a Riviera afternoon. Churchill paints as an amateur in the old sense, plainly and with affection.
