Distant View of Awajishima

A long island rests on the horizon, low and blue, its silhouette floating over a broad sweep of pale water. Distant View of Awajishima by Fujishima Takeji reads as one wide breath of sea and sky. Fujishima worked in the yoga manner, applying oil pigment with a Western eye for atmosphere. Here the brushload stays thin and silvery. Soft grays wash the headland, a haze of pearl and muted violet settles over the strait, and small dark strokes suggest boats or rocks near the foreground shore. The sky occupies most of the surface, streaked with horizontal bands of cream and cool gray, so the island seems to hover rather than sit. A quiet presence for a hallway or a reading room, where the horizon can pull the eye outward.
