Dinnyés Csendélet 1938

Melons crowd the tabletop in Dinnyés Csendélet 1938, a Hungarian still life by Vaszary János. One fruit lies split open, seed cavity glistening, a cut wedge set beside it. The paint goes on thick. Flesh the color of apricot, rind striped grey-green, seeds black as peppercorns. Behind, the ground falls into deep umber, so the fruit seems lit from within. Loose, loaded strokes of oil paint stay visible across the crumpled cream tablecloth. Hung it where meals happen: a dining room, a kitchen corner, a breakfast nook with morning sun. The melon rewards a second look from across the table.
