The gulf opens flat and bright beneath the ruined heights, the same water that met the exiled queen when she chose this shore. Violet Oakley records that vantage in Dido View (from the Site of Carthage). Watercolor washes of cerulean and pale jade build the sea in thin bands; sun-bleached ochre and dusty rose pick out fallen masonry on the ridge. Cypress spires hold the middle distance while a single sail crosses the glinting water below. Loose brushwork keeps the glare of noon.
