Devita

Sunlight breaks over a high Himalayan summit in Devita, Nicholas Roerich filling the sky above a valley still held in shadow. The peak reads almost luminous at its crown. Roerich layers tempera into planes of cobalt, violet and bone white, the mountain edges sharpened with dry, angular strokes. Below, dark foothills and a thin pale glacier descend toward a floor of deep ultramarine haze. Every band of color sits flat and deliberate, the way the master painter of the Himalayas built his landscapes like panels in an icon. A quiet presence for a study or reading room, wherever mountains are welcome company.
