Design of Initial V

A single letter takes over the page. Design of Initial V shows Aubrey Beardsley treating an illuminated capital as pure theatre, the way Victorian illustrators of Le Morte Darthur turned typography into ornament. Thick black ink does all the work here. The V itself rises in bold contours while whiplash foliage, knotwork scrollery and swirling tendrils coil through and around the letterform, hollowed out with areas of untouched white paper. The line is acid and exact, every flourish balanced against the stark negative space, the Art Nouveau love of sinuous growth meeting a Decadent taste for the grotesque. Hung in a reading nook, study, or dim hallway, the design rewards a second look at close range.
