Deluge IX

Waves curl and rise in solemn order across the surface of Deluge IX, a vision of flood rendered by Lithuanian symbolist Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis. Water takes on the logic of architecture here, stacked and rhythmic rather than chaotic. Look closely and the flood becomes pattern: scalloped crests repeat like roof tiles, deep blues sink toward teal and grey, and pale foam edges each swell with a fine, deliberate line. The composition reads almost as ornament, water treated the way a goldsmith treats metal. A natural companion for a study or reading room, where its cool cadence rewards long, quiet looking and gives the wall a strong horizontal pull.
