Deep Blue Sea

Waves roll in long, heavy swells across the surface, their crests catching a cold light against water that runs nearly to indigo. Deep Blue Sea by John French Sloan captures the Atlantic as an Ashcan painter saw it: not picturesque, but alive with weather and weight. The blue dominates everything, broken only by pale foam and the dark reflection of a low sky. Look closely and the brushwork does the work of the tide. Short, wet strokes drag lighter pigment across the darker ground so the water seems to move even at rest. The horizon sits low and slightly off center, giving the sea more room than the sky. Hues shift from cobalt shadow to a greyer slate where the light flattens out, and the paint surface itself carries a grain that reads like salt air. A seascape with this much atmosphere belongs in a quiet room: a study, a hallway facing north light, or above a reading chair where the eye can rest on open water.
