Decoration, Wheat Ears

Wheat ears rise and bend across the field, drawn as pure line. Otto Eckmann titled this design Decoration, epis de ble, and the subject is exactly that: grain rendered as ornament, nothing else. Each stalk curves in a long rhythm, seed heads heavy, awns bristling like fine needles. The linework carries the Jugendstil taste for the whiplash curve, one stem crossing another in shallow interlace. Golden ochre tones glow against a quiet ground, the grain lifted almost to gilding. A kitchen or dining room suits it, especially above a table or sideboard, where the harvest motif reads at a glance.
