Debacle

Ice floes crowd the river channel, jagged and pale, as the spring thaw breaks apart the winter sheet. Debacle captures that moment on the Neva when the frozen surface finally gives way. Ostroumova-Lebedeva works in watercolor and woodcut logic here, all clean planes and disciplined line. Cool blue-grays dominate, cut by white highlights along each floe edge and the low far bank. The water reads as wet, moving, heavy with drifting ice, while the sky stays thin and cold above it. A study or reading nook suits its quiet northern palette, where a view of breaking ice rewards long, slow looking.
