Daybreak (I)

Light climbs over a dark horizon in Daybreak (I), one of Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis early visions of dawn. The title says morning; the image says something closer to revelation. A luminous disc rises above layered bands of deep blue and muted gold, its glow softening the ridgeline beneath. The Lithuanian symbolist builds the sky in flat, deliberate strata, each band a different weight of pigment, so the light seems to push upward through the paint itself. Below, the terrain stays heavy and shadowed, catching only the first thin wash of color along its edges. Hung in a bedroom, hallway, or quiet reading corner, it brings the hushed hour when night gives ground to morning.
