Day

A golden sun crowns the composition, its concentric rings radiating over a small town drawn in pale, dreamlike tones. Ciurlionis titled this vision Day, part of his meditation on the passage of light across a quiet world. The Lithuanian symbolist builds the scene in tempered ochres and silvery blues, the sun rendered as a musical figure rather than a source of heat. Below, modest houses and slender trees sit in soft shadow, drawn with the precise, almost carved line of someone trained in both painting and music.
