Dark Sea and Red Sail

A red sail rides across a black swell of water in Dark Sea and Red Sail, one of John Duncan Fergusson boldest marine subjects. The title alone tells you the drama before you look. The composition holds everything in two opposing weights. Deep blue-black paint covers most of the surface in broad, loaded strokes, the sea built from layered darks rather than line. Against that field, a single triangular sail burns in scarlet and vermilion, its edges softened where wet colour met wet. The horizon sits low, the sky barely distinguishable from water, so all the contrast falls on that one defiant shape of red. Sail it into a study, a stairwell, or a reading room that leans toward deep tones and needs one point of heat.
