Dark Avenue

A tree-lined avenue recedes into near darkness, its flanks drawn in deep greens and ink-shadowed blues. This is Dark Avenue by Maria Yakunchikova, a work of Russian landscape art where dusk becomes the true subject. Look closely and the trunks read as vertical strokes of charcoal and violet, massed so densely that only slivers of sky remain between the crowns. The ground carries a cool sheen, brushed in layered glazes that suggest wet earth after rain. Light survives at the far end of the path, a pale opening the eye keeps returning to. The palette suits a hallway or stairwell, somewhere passage and painting agree on their mood.
