Dark Autumn, Rocky Mountains

Rugged peaks shoulder into a sky gone grey at the close of the season. Dark Autumn, Rocky Mountains by J. E. H. MacDonald of the Group of Seven sets bare larch and wind-scoured spruce against slope and scree. Burnt sienna and umber dominate, slashed through with cold violet shadow along the ridge lines. Thick impasto ridges catch light the way frost catches a morning, each stroke doing the work of weather. Yellow undergrowth burns low in the foreground valley, the last heat of October held in oil. A study or hallway gains gravity and northern quiet from a mountain scene this heavy and hushed.
