Daphnis and Chloe Scenery for Act II

A grotto of pale rock opens onto the sea, its arch framing water in bands of turquoise and cobalt. Leon Bakst designed this stage setting for Daphnis and Chloe, act II. Against a cliff face washed in chalky rose and grey, a sculpted group of three nymphs rises on its plinth, arms lifting the sleeping Daphnis. Flat washes of emerald and lapis fill the water below, while small figures pause at the entrance, their tunics a muted terracotta. A study or stairwell lit by evening lamps suits its deep blues and chalk whites, colors that stay calm once the room goes quiet.
