Dancing Woman

A red skirt whirls wide as a woman turns, and Filipp Malyavin catches her mid-spin in Dancing woman, every inch of the picture given over to motion. Broad loaded strokes of oil paint build the crimson dress until it fills nearly the whole frame, hem flaring like an opened bell. Her flushed face and loose braid surface at the top edge, small against a sea of scarlet, while the dark ground swallows all other detail. A stairwell or music room suits her best, anywhere with height and lamplight; deep plaster walls and low evening light flatter the near-black backdrop and the blaze of color.
