Dampfschiff auf Thunersee

A paddle steamer cuts across the Thunersee, its wake dragging white ribbons through water painted in thick, cold blues. This lake scene by Cuno Amiet carries the confidence of Swiss post-impressionism at full sail. Amiet loads the foreground with short, loaded strokes of ultramarine and slate, broken where sunlight strikes the chop. The funnel trails a soft plume of smoke that dissolves into a sky of milky lilac and pale lemon, while the wooded shore of the Bernese Oberland sits as a low band of deep green and umber along the horizon. Passengers register as dabs of crimson and ochre along the deck rail. Suited to a lakeside living room, a hallway with good light, or above a writing desk where the water keeps moving.
