Daisies

Daisies spill from a heavy stoneware jug, white petals and yolk-yellow centers laid down in thick, confident strokes. Pyotr Konchalovsky treated these field flowers like portraits, every one given its own stubborn character. Oil paint lies dense across the surface, and ridges of impasto catch the light so each flower head seems to turn as you move past. Stems cross at odd angles inside the jug, green against green, and the table edge drops into a band of deep, unbothered shadow. A kitchen, a breakfast nook, a sunroom with varnish peeling off the sill: flowers like these belong where mornings start slowly and coffee takes its time.
