Cypresses

Dark cypress spires rise through a hillside clearing, their black-green flames stacked against a pale afternoon sky. Fujishima Takeji paints the trees in dense, layered strokes of viridian and umber, each mass shaped with the weight of oil pigment rather than the lightness of ink. Below, low scrub and dry grasses catch a warmer olive light, and the ground tilts gently so the eye climbs toward the tallest tree. The sky stays quiet, a hush of pearl and grey blue that lets the dark silhouettes do all the work. A study or hallway with plain plaster walls and pale wood furniture gives this standing grove room to breathe.
