Cypress Trees

Cypress trees rise in dark vertical spires, their silhouettes cut hard against a pale sky. This work by Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva takes those slender flame-shaped forms as its entire subject. Ink and watercolor washes carry the scene: deep green-black foliage layered in fine hatching, trunks drawn with a sure single stroke, open paper left bare where the light falls. The graphic discipline of woodcut draftsmanship shows in every line, each needle cluster built from short deliberate marks rather than blur. Ground shadow pools cool grey beneath the rows. A quiet corner of a study or hallway suits it, somewhere the vertical rhythm reads clearly against plain plaster.
