Cyclamen

Cyclamen petals tilt upward in a shallow glass, pink wings against a pale ground. Samuel Peploe paints the flowers with the economy of a Scottish Colourist, each bloom reduced to a few decisive strokes of rose and magenta. The still life rests on a table cloth washed in cool grey, leaves curling in deep green below the flower heads. Brushwork stays visible throughout, pigment laid on thickly where the petals catch light, thin and translucent in the shadowed folds of the cloth. Pink dominates, tempered by sage and slate. A quiet corner of a dining room or bedside table rewards this kind of close looking, where the flowers can be seen fresh each morning.
