About this work

Cry of the Serpent

A serpent lifts its call across a high mountain plain, its cry rendered as a spiraling form in the sky of this Nicholas Roerich composition. The creature reads less as animal than as signal, threaded through cold air. Tempera gives the peaks their chalky frost, blues built in thin opalescent layers over visible underdrawing. The serpent coils in red and violet against that pallor, and the foreground rocks carry dry, scratchy crosshatching. Roerich, the Russian symbolist, loved such thresholds where heaven and stone press close. Suited to a study or reading nook, anywhere that rewards long, quiet looking.
