A whitewashed monastery rises among pine slopes in this woodcut by Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, its domes and bell tower drawn against the mountains of Crimea with her characteristic economy of line. The title reads Crimea. Monastery of St. Cosmas and St.Damian. Below the buildings, dark hatching gives the forest real weight, each tree a column of ink rather than a soft suggestion. Pale sky and snow patches stay untouched paper, so the white of the mountain landscape does half the compositional work. Sunlight seems to come from behind the ridge, throwing the architecture into quiet relief. It belongs in a study or reading nook, anywhere with cool northern light and shelf of books on travel and landscape.
