Crimea. Cypress

A single cypress drives upward through the coastal haze in Crimea. Cypress, a landscape Pyotr Konchalovsky built around one dark flame of a tree, needle and shadow from root to tip. Oil color goes down in short, angled strokes. Ochre and burnt sienna stack the hillside, a slab of cobalt sea sits flat behind, and pale walls catch the glare at the foot of the slope. The tree itself reads nearly black, one edge warmed where the sun clips it. Terraced gardens step toward the water below. Set it in a stairway or study, somewhere the dry heat and salt air of the south can carry through the room.
