Crépuscule

A luminous twilight scene rendered in soft photographic tones, Crépuscule stands among the most poetic works of Heinrich Kuhn. Deep violet and amber light dissolve into one another across a calm, dreamlike composition. Kuhn was a master of pictorial photography, using gum bichromate and pigment processes to build layers of tone the way a painter layers glaze. Gentle gradations of mauve, gold, and slate blue shift across the surface, with forms suggested rather than outlined, giving the whole image the soft breath of dusk itself.
