Dark forms gather at the edge of an unnamed sea in Creation of the World VIII, one of Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis most mysterious visions of matter taking shape. Everything here is still becoming. The palette runs deep: near-black indigo massed against bands of pale gold and grey, the surface handled like tempera, thin and luminous. Rounded organic shapes press upward from below while flat, sonar-like rings ripple across the distance, a rhythm the composer-painter would have heard before he saw it. Suited to a study or music room, anywhere that rewards quiet looking and long questions about how form begins.
