Creation of the World VI

Fernlike fronds unfurl across a deep blue field, curling like the first vegetation called out of darkness. This is Creation of the World VI by Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis. The Lithuanian composer-painter rendered his genesis cycle in tempera, and here the pigment sits matte and velvety, greens and umbers glowing against an indigo ground. Circular shapes, almost planetary, hover behind the sprouting forms, suggesting seeds and suns alike. Every stroke feels written rather than painted, notation become plant. A quiet study or reading nook suits this genesis image, especially beside books on music, mythology, or early twentieth century symbolism.
