Crash of the L 1

A crippled zeppelin drops tail first toward cold grey swells while tiny rescue craft cut white wakes across the chop. Achille Beltrame records the L 1 disaster at the very instant of impact. Gouache does the reporting: storm clouds dragged in slate and dirty white, hull skin picked out in cold silver, foam dabbed on in thick pale flecks. Ink crosshatching tightens the gondolas and rigging, and figures in the water shrink to matchstick scale against all that metal. Hang it where news still feels urgent: a study, a hallway near the front door, or a reading nook for anyone drawn to early aviation and illustrated journalism.
