Cover 1894

A peacock unfurls its tail across the composition, feathers rendered as flat black fans pricked with pale eyes. This is Cover 1894 by Aubrey Beardsley, a design built from ink, curve, and calculated emptiness. Beardsley works almost entirely in black, letting the white of the page do as much labor as the pen. Crosshatching thickens into near solid shadow at the wings, while thin tendrils of line trail off into blankness. The peacock body curves like a calligraphic flourish, and every plume is stylized to the point of ornament. A reading nook or dressing room suits this level of decadence, where fin de siècle graphic work can hold its own against dark paint or heavy furniture.
