Courtyard in St. Petersburg

Laundry strung between sheer tenement walls gives Courtyard in St. Petersburg its hushed drama; Mstislav Dobuzhinsky frames the deep urban well that shaped housing in the old capital. Fire escapes zigzag up wet plaster, and a narrow slot of northern sky holds pale light above the cornices.
