Courtyard in Shaukenay

Walled off from the street, a small courtyard holds its breath. Dobuzhinsky frames Shaukenay from inside its own enclosure, where weathered plaster and a wooden gate close around a patch of pale northern sky. Rough renderings of brick and stucco dominate the foreground, their surfaces broken by hatched shadow. A few potted plants crowd a windowsill. Laundry or vine tendrils droop across a line. Overhead, rooftops press inward, and the ink or watercolor linework, thin and nervous in the best Symbolist manner, gives each cornice a slightly drawn, haunted quality. The palette stays muted: greyed ochre, faded brown, the cold white of untouched paper. It suits a hallway or a quiet reading corner, where the enclosed stillness of the scene can be lingered over at close range.
