Countryside Houses

Village rooftops cluster along a dirt lane in Countryside Houses, an oil painting by Romanian painter Octav Bancila. Gabled houses rise one behind another, their walls catching afternoon light. Thatched and shingled roofs overlap in warm browns and muted ochre. Whitewashed facades carry soft grey shadows, window openings dark and irregular. Fences, bare trees, and smoke-hazed sky fill the gaps between buildings. Brushwork stays loose and earthy, grounded in rural observation rather than picturesque polish. Suited to a study, hallway, or reading nook where quiet pastoral scenes earn long attention.
