Country Road

Ruts score the dry earth as the lane climbs away from the fields, thinning between grassy verges to a pale thread near the horizon. Country Road by Arthur Verona follows that climb. Ochre and dusty green carry the scene, pigment brushed in quick open strokes that let the ground breathe through. A low stand of trees breaks the skyline at one side, crowns worked in overlapping dabs of olive and moss. Heat hazes the pale sky where the road vanishes. Set in a hallway or above a writing desk, it opens a window of quiet farmland at the end of a long day.
