Cottage by a Stream

A whitewashed cottage settles into the bank where the stream slows, its shutters open to the current. Louis Aston Knight painted these Normandy waterways with a devotion few rivals matched. Oil pigment laid in loose, wet strokes turns the water into a running mirror: willow shadows, a red roofline and garden hollyhock all doubled and wobbling in the current. Moss greens and soft greys dominate, warmed by brick and flowering hedgerow. A sunroom or breakfast nook suits it best, anywhere morning light can warm the greens and the water keeps its quiet movement at the edge of the day.
