Cote dAzur

Turquoise water presses against a strip of shore, broken only by a small boat riding its own reflection. Cote dAzur distills the French Riviera through the eyes of Pierre Bonnard. Bonnard builds the scene from stacked planes of color: cobalt shallows deepen toward ultramarine, a band of ochre sand warms the lower edge, and green foliage crowds one corner. The paint sits thick, almost woven, with dabs of rose and lemon flecking the water where light scatters. No horizon line dominates; instead the eye slides between sea, sand, and leaf in a slow spiral. It belongs in a sunroom or above a reading chair, anywhere that wants a window of southern light on an overcast afternoon.
