Costruzione Geometrica

Bands of black, ochre and slate cross the surface in a strict architectural grid, anchored by a fish at the base and a sun and stars above. Costruzione Geometrica is Joaquin Torres Garcia at his most ordered. The composition reads like a builders diagram turned cosmology. Vertical rules divide the field into narrow compartments; diagonal hinges pivot the eye upward; flat planes of red, umber and cold blue sit beside each other without blending. Figures, arcs and numerals share the same lattice, each symbol pressed flush against its neighbor so the whole surface holds together like inlaid stone. A study, an entryway, or a hallway with white walls gives this grid room to breathe and rewards a slow look.
