Cornflowers

Blue cornflowers gather in a glass jar, their heads turned every which way against a dark, quiet ground. Luchian painted these Romanian wildflowers with an affection few still lifes manage. Cobalt and periwinkle petals carry flecks of white at each center, and the stems cross at odd angles where they were dropped into the water. Loose, loaded brushwork keeps every bloom slightly off balance. Thin green leaves cut through the blue, and the jar catches a single pale highlight near its shoulder. Around the flowers the background deepens into warm brown, letting each petal hold its own light. Suited to a reading nook or kitchen corner, anywhere that welcomes a handful of July meadow indoors.
