Cornflowers in a Ray of Sunshine

Blue cornflowers crowd the frame, petals caught mid-light where a sunbeam crosses them. Konstantin Yuon painted this small still life with the same affection he gave his Russian village scenes. In Cornflowers in a Ray of Sunshine, wild blooms become the whole subject. Look closely and the brushwork does the work: cobalt and violet petals laid wet against pale greens, stems crossing at crooked angles like flowers gathered by hand and dropped on a windowsill. The ray of sunshine warms the tops of the heads while the lower stems sit in cool shadow, giving depth without any props or table edge. It reads as a quick plein air study, loose at the edges and precise where the light lands. A kitchen window seat, a breakfast nook, or a country reading corner would suit it. Anywhere morning light actually falls.
